It’s Thursday night. You’ve been refreshing the same listing for four days: a silver Cayman, clean photos, “garage kept, all records.” The seller in Henderson says two other people are coming to look Saturday, so you’d better decide fast. You’re about to drive over with a cashier’s check. Here’s why you should make one stop first.
A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is the best few hundred dollars you’ll ever spend on a Porsche. A car can look perfect and still hide problems that cost thousands. A good PPI tells you what you’re actually buying, and it gives you leverage to negotiate or the confidence to walk away.
What a proper Porsche PPI covers
- Engine health: Leak check, cooling system, scan for stored fault codes, and, on many models, a check of the engine’s over-rev records, which can show if the car was ever badly over-revved from a missed shift
- Model-specific issues: IMS bearing on 1997 to 2008 flat-sixes, cylinder bore wear on certain engines, and other known weak points for that exact car
- Transmission and clutch: PDK behavior, clutch wear on manuals
- Suspension, brakes, and tires: Worn bushings, rotor and pad life, tire age
- Body and paint: Signs of accident repair, mismatched paint, and panel gaps
- Service records: Do the receipts match the car’s history and mileage?

What the desert does to a used Porsche
Cars that spend their lives in Las Vegas have a few extra things to check:
- Sun damage: Faded paint, cracked dashboards, dried-out leather, and brittle trim
- Heat-aged rubber: Hoses, seals, and tires that look fine but are past their prime
- Cooling system wear: Radiators clogged with debris and coolant parts stressed by years of heat
- Battery and electrical: Heat is hard on batteries and can cause odd electrical faults
The good news: desert cars usually have little or no rust, which is a big plus compared to cars from snowy states.
Don’t let a deadline rush you
A seller who won’t let you get an inspection is telling you something. Any honest seller of a good car should welcome a PPI. If someone else buys it while you’re waiting on an inspection, it probably wasn’t the right car.
